Turning a successful e-commerce project into a successful program
In order to facilitate its growing online presence and e-commerce operations, Kohl’s brought on Bowen to design 1,000,000 SF of space for use as an E-commerce Fulfillment Center (EFC). The initial project in Edgewood, Maryland involved the adaptive re-use of an existing 601,920 SF distribution center with a 398,400 SF addition.
Interior warehousing space was maximized by adding a four-level pick module system providing nearly 100,000 SF of mezzanine space per level. We worked closely with the owner’s in-house logistics and IT teams along with selected racking and conveyor system consultants to ensure that inbound products from manufacturers are sorted quickly, moved efficiently to the ship-to-pick areas, and finally shipped to the customer. The scope of work also included the design of 50,000 SF of office space and employee amenities.
We used the successful Edgewood project as the basis for additional EFCs. The projects achieve Silver and Gold LEED Certification.
We also led a renovation of a 640,000 SF distribution center in Findlay, Ohio. Improvements included the construction of 64 new receiving and shipping doors in addition to new work platforms and material handling equipment.
