Multiple Ohio Locations
A vision for the future of Ohio’s highways
The Ohio Rest Stop Concept re-imagines traditional rest stops by embracing the duality
of momentum and restoration. Rather than nondescript spaces, these structures aim to create meaningful and refined architecture that combines the transient nature of automotive travel with the immediacy of human scale. Scattered throughout Ohio’s automotive network, these modest structures juxtapose active and restful programmatic uses through their formal design.
Two familiar shapes, situated in the landscape, pique curiosity, and disrupt the constant movement of the transient world. Drawing people in, the clear forms provide an unexpectedly tactile and textured experience. The permeable stacked primitive features an open-air colonnade and enclosed lobby, while the monumental solid form anchors a sheltered sense of place and respite. These two forms interact in temporal opposition, inviting people to pause, catch their breath, and enjoy a moment of tranquility amid the textures of inhabitation.
